Delta State’s political chessboard just added a wildcard. The African Democratic Congress has anointed Dr. Emmanuel Unuafe, a United Kingdom-based lecturer at Arden University, as its governorship flag-bearer for the 2027 election. The party’s state congress ratified his candidacy on Friday, positioning an academic outsider against Delta’s entrenched political machines.
Unuafe’s emergence exposes ADC’s deliberate break from the state’s traditional power blocs. The party, still nursing wounds from its 2023 electoral drubbing, has pivoted to a fresh face untouched by local godfatherism. His academic pedigree and diaspora profile mirror the party’s calculated gamble to attract undecided urban voters disillusioned with the PDP-APC duopoly. Yet, the move also risks alienating grassroots mobilisers who demand home-grown candidates with local clout.
Legal landmines already loom. INEC’s nomination portal remains a graveyard for minor-party candidates, while the Delta political establishment has a history of weaponising court injunctions to stall outsider campaigns. Unuafe’s diaspora status may also trigger eligibility disputes under Section 177 of the Constitution, which mandates residency for governorship aspirants. The ADC’s legal team is scrambling to preempt these challenges before the nomination window slams shut.
The real battle, however, will unfold in the trenches. Delta’s political terrain is a minefield of ethnic micro-factions, where Urhobo, Itsekiri, and Ijaw blocs dictate electoral math. Unuafe’s non-alignment with any of these groups could either position him as a unifier or render him a floating candidate without a base. The ADC’s skeletal party structure in the state further compounds the challenge, leaving Unuafe to build a campaign apparatus from scratch while PDP’s Sheriff Oborevwori and APC’s emerging contenders consolidate their war chests.
This is not just another candidate anointing. It is ADC’s high-stakes bet on disrupting Delta’s political calculus. Whether Unuafe’s academic credentials can translate into electoral votes will determine if the party remains a fringe player or forces its way into the state’s power equation.
